Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski stated today in a radio interview that there is no need for early elections and talks with Polish Peasant Party make him hope for the best.
However, he added that if he fails to form government majority in the parliament an election may become a necessity. Today's issue of popular daily Gazeta Wyborcza brings the results of the latest opinion poll. The Civic Platform has maintained its lead over the Law and Justice and is supported by 33% of the voters. The Law and Justice may count on 23%. The third runner-up is the Self-Defence backed by 11% of voters.
Almost 10% of respondents support the Centre-Left Coalition. Polish Peasant Party and League of Polish Families would not make it back to the new parliament. According to the Speaker of the Parliament the lower chamber is to make a decision regarding its dissolution on October 12.
The outcome of the vote is highly uncertain as the ruling Law and Justice was mightily baffled by the information that the Civic Platform and the Polish Peasants Party intend to join forces in the coming local elections. The only possible counter-candidate for the coalition is the Self-Defence which left the government just weeks ago.
The Law and Justice leaders would accept the party back into the government but without its leader Andrzej Lepper who has already announced that he must get a ministerial post to consider cooperation. The third coalition member the right-wing League of Polish Families supports the Self-Defence with which it intends to co-operate in the coming local elections and protests against cooperation with the Polish Peasant Party.
The issue is clearly so complex that even personal participation of the President Lech Kaczynski did not help the four parties to reach a mutually acceptable solution.
