Today is Fat Thursday in Poland, at the end of the carnival season, where Poles eat enormous amounts of doughnuts and other sweet pastries. Favourites are jam filled “paczki”, or doughnuts and crisp “faworki” pastries.
The origins of this tradition are not clear although it is certain that it has at least one hundred years. Social anthropologist Tadeusz Baraniuk told Polish Radio that the tradition to eat sweets on Fat Thursday came to Poland from the western Europe around 17-18 century.
As Fat Thursday is the last occasion for feast making before Lent, which is a time of fasting, it’s simply a must to eat at least one doughnut to celebrate the day properly. Be careful though! One “p±czek” has approximately 400 calories.
