Football violence in Warsaw
2006-05-14, 17:41
54 policemen have been injured and 230 football hooligans detained after Saturday night disturbances in the streets of Warsaw.

Over 30 policemen had to be hospitalized. The disturbances followed the first division match between Legia of Warsaw and Wisła of Kraków.

Several thousand Legia supporters celebrated the leaque title for their team by marching to the Old City quarter where they tried to break into shops, damaged cafes and restaurants and attacked the police with stones.

The police had to use water canon and truncheons to disperse the hooligans, most of whom were under the influence of alcohol.
